Root Trimming

When trimming a plant from a 1 gal. container, doesn't it put the plant into Shock?

I have a fuchsia I'm geting ready to bonsai and don't know how much of the roots

to cut off, (depth wise).

After doing this, do I put it in it's new pot, or do I put it in a smaller container

til the shock is over, and is there anything I can do to treat the shock.
