lace leaf red maple?

I just bought one of those weeping red maples that they sell for way too much at garden stores. When I took it out or the burlap the "soil" was mud and the roots were only in about 1/4th of the "root ball". On the roots there were these big bulby growths like I fight with on my ficus. I didn't know maples got these. My questions are, (1) is this natural? (2) Do I just cut them off and treat this tree like any other maple bonsai? Thanks, Zack
