I posted this under the bulb forum but unfortunately I wasn't able to get a response, so I thought I would try here in the event that someone could help me. We grow these types of anemones as annuals here and I planted them in large 4" peat pots, but a bit too early (under grow lights). Now they are leggy and floppy and about 7 or 8" tall. My intention is to plant them, peat pots and all into a larger container, however does anyone know if I can plant the peat pots deeper in the larger container, so that they aren't so floppy and leggy? I know that with some plants, like dahlias for example, you start the tubers shallowly then plant them deeper in the ground after the foliage has grown. Any advice about whether or not anemone coronarias can take this treatment would be greatly appreciated. I planted them 2" deep in the peat pots, but various references suggest they can be planted as deep as 4", therefore I am inclined to think I could plant them under inch or two below the soil, given the planting depth range they have. Can anyone offer any comments or theories about this? I've planted them before, but not this way and they seem quite tough, but I'd hate all that nice foliage to rot from partly being planted below soil, which is why I'm asking for some advice before I try this today!
