Umbrella Tree Bonsai

I bought what I think to be an umbrella tree about 1 year ago from a local nursery. When I bought it I had no intension of making it into a bonsai, but I took a Beginner Bonsai Workshop last weekend and now I am wondering if I can make this into a bonsai.

The tree is about 20" tall with lots of branches and leaves. The trunk is green and it is about 1/2" in diameter. Do you think my tree is just young still and thats why it still has a green trunk or is it some species that will never have a solid brown bark trunk? Thanks for the help and info!

It's still young, though whether it ever gets bark like an oak or maple is hard to say, certainly it will be a while.

How large a pot is it growing in??
You may want to get it into a larger pot if you are interested in having a large trunk to bonsai.

there are also mini-bonsai which I feel are quite suited to
smaller trunk plants but these can be tricky especially if
you are using a very small pot such as around a 3 inch oval or less as root space is a premium and so the smaller plants are more readily adaptable.

How about an image of your plant.

I will get a picture up. It is in a fairly large pot (about 6-7" in diameter and 10-12" deep) Thanks for the info.
