in my z5 ... late summer is a hard time to get anything going ... for a couple reasons ...

one.. no much is for sale

its not conducive to seedlings ...

and if you are talking july/august.. well .. the season ends in october .... and a lot of things take 90 days to mature.. if you get past the above ...

ergo .. ipso presto ...

this summer might be a good time to do some garden architecture ... develop some new beds.. and get ready for next year.. rather than get all flustered trying to do things you know from z9CA in Z6 ID ... it probably just wont work ...

one suggestion might be to track down a local garden club.. and get better acquainted with what grows in z6 .. when winter comes ... and see if they have anything they need to thin out in fall ...

if this is your first foray into z6.. its going to be a whole nother world from z9 .. or you will add facts and i will be wrong ...

in z6 .. fall is one of the best times for planting trees and conifers.. and shrubs ... the tops go dormant.. and they will continue to regenerate roots until the ground freezes solid ... bet that doesnt happen in z9CA.. lol ..

Don't give up. I can't say a word about vegetables but for the flowers, just locate the nearest nurseries and, if it's anything like my area, there will be lots of container-grown material for sale. Try good nurseries, the big-box stores, the grocery store. Lots of people need to fill in bare spots at that time and you can too but it costs more than young plants in the spring. Good luck.
