Apparently bees cannot see the color red(they see yellow, blue and purple flowers, and also see colors in the ultraviolet spectrum), so maybe you could plant red flowers along with some interesting foliage plants.

This is not a 'silly' or insensitive request. Don't apologize for your very real phobia. Phobias are, generally, very easy to 'cure' should you ever be interested.

But anyway, this concern comes up every year, and is always answered by some very helpful folks. I WISH I had saved a post from last year where someone listed several flowers that did not attract pollinators. Attached is a useful article, however, that might help you.

You might try African daisies -- the annual Dimorphotheca kind. I don't remember them attracting bees much, and that article linked by rhizo says daisies are not very attractive to bees. These kind look good in a hanging basket or window box, too, since they'll hang over the side a little. They can peter out in a lot of heat, but your midday shade might help them last longer.

My wife is also very insistent on keeping bees away from the front or back door. I had to move some wonderful Caryopteris shrubs away from the back deck, because she wouldn't sit out there with all the buzzing going on -- the bees LOVE those shrubs!

Personally, I just mingle right in with the bees when I'm working in the garden, and it's usually fine. However, I got stung by a bee on my thumb last year, right in the part where the skin is thin between my thumbnail and the first knuckle. OUCH! The darn critters were all over some nepeta flowers and one must have been in the grass nearby, because I think I swept my hand over the grass right as it nailed me. I hopped around and squeezed my thumb real hard, and it was all OK in about five minutes! Kind of scared my kids, though.
