Hi Linda, impatiens are extremely easy to root. Just pinch off the ends of the stems and either stick them in water or straight into the soil, making sure to keep them moist. If they are blooming or have buds, be sure to pinch them off as they will take away from the rooting process. I have also taken the bare stem and making sure that I am putting the right end into the water or soil, had them root. Leave the roots in the pot and they should send up new stems also.

Oooo, that sounds good. So the bare stem will put put more leaves? They are so long I could take 5", root them separately and still leave 2-3" on the roots!

And just keep the dirt moist? Do they need to be in bright light?

Yes, you should get leaves on the bare stems. At first when you put the stems in soil to root them, they can go in a place with less light. If I am rooting indoors, then I put the pots or containers of water in a room away from direct sun. Of course if you are doing this outdoors, then they will be fine and have to deal with whatever conditions they are in. They are pretty tough and should do okay.

Don't forget that the original plant will come up after you have pruned off all the stems that you want to root. :)

And if you leave the long bare stems on the plant and give the plant light and water and dilute food, those stems will put out new shoots and you will eventually have a very large plant.

Impatiens are one of the easiest plants to root. I have a friend who buys flats of impatiens every year--half the amount she needs. Then she pinches the top off every small plant and roots all those cuttings in potting mix in other flats. She keeps them moist on a glassed-in porch--too cold for outdoors yet here. She ends up with twice the number of plants she bought so ends up paying 50% off for her impatiens. Brilliant!
