It's probably something in the Labiatae family. Is it a wildflower, something from a bought bouquet, from a garden plant, or what? Any idea of the shape and size of the leaves? You could take it to the library and ask the reference librarian to help you key it out using one of the reference books kept for that purpose. A master gardener could probably help you as well this way. As a wild guess, it's probably a salvia or mint of some kind. Since there are about 1200 species of salvia alone, don't ask me which one without a close-up picture!

Annual Statice is Limonium sinuata. Grown as an annual zone 8 and colder. This is one of my annual crops this year as a Greenhouse student :)
The Statice you are referring to is actually called Square-stemmed Statice AKA Autumn Statice (L. tetragonum); hardy to zone 8-9.

She means it will live over the winter in zones 8 and warmer.
I suspect what you have is Limonium Tartaricum which would be perennial in your zone.
