but what i would do..

first count how many long vines ... i see ... 9???

i would cut one or two back.. trace them back to were you see a tiny new bud..

and in a week to ten days.. i would cut more.. etc ...

this will remove the uglies.. and rejuvenate the plant...

if you thought that planting a couple plants in the center.. would cover the whole.. i think you might need many more plants ... with some planted more toward the edges ... that is for next year ...

it looks awful dry.. but that might just be the mulch ..

It's the mulch....I give it water almost every night, as I know the dirt will dry out much quicker in this old wheelbarrow. With it being 90+ degrees every day here in Ohio and no rain in 2 weeks, things dry out very quickly. Good thing I used Moisture Control soil in that thing or else it might be worse!

I didn't know how many plants it would take to overflow the whole thing. I know nothing about these plants, so I didn't know if 1 would do it or not.

Petunias like to dry out. They don't like to wilt, but being moist all the time could eventually kill it, especially if there's no hole for extra water to drain out.

They bloom at the tips of the branches, so having more branches = more flowers. Instead of cutting them shorter (and removing flowering tips,) I like to remove leaves along the stem. This encourages the new branches to grow without losing any "volume."
