It was probably a mutation. If you know which plant produced the three-headed flower, you might want to save seeds from any other flowers that it produces, just for the novelty of it. This is a picture of a mutant zinnia that I had last year.

If you grow a lot of zinnias, you have improved chances for finding interesting mutants. If you like an unusual zinnia, save seeds from it, and grow them to see what you get.

Could also be aster yellows virus, too. A picture might help to identify whether this is a problem or not.

Rhizo, thanks for the heads up on possiblility of disease. Will flag this plant and watch it. The rest of the plant looks healthy now and has normal blossoms.
