Oops, maybe wrong forum?

I think someone already posted on one of the other 3 threads you posted on this question that plain old shop lights work fine. Your page doesn't say where you live but do you have a Walmart, Lowes, Home Depot, Menard's, Ace Hardware, Farm & Fleet, or any similar stores around you? They all carry 4' shop lights for under $10.00 and bulbs for 2/$3.99 or so. 24" fixtures and bulbs are much less in demand, much harder to find, and 4x as expensive. So just go with the 48" ones and let the longer lights hang out over the end of your shelves. But if that doesn't appeal to you for some reason then pick up 1 or 2 of the round bell-shaped reflector lights and a pack of the 100 watt equivalent flourescent round bulbs they sell now.

Honestly, you don't need anything fancier than that. ;)

Digdirt, thanks for the response. Sorry again for the multiple posts, my brain was not working very well today and I kept making mistakes. Anyway, I've been to Menards, Hardware Hank, and Ace Hardware to no avail. The only shop lights were $20 plus another $10 or so for bulbs, and of course were the 48 inchers which won't work for the shelf I'd like to use, as the shelf is 36" and the sides are not open. Do you know if any of the lights I indicated above would work, or are they not powerful enough?

I'm fortunate enough to have a pantry where I have shelves to keep my commercially canned and home canned preserved jams, etc. As I can start seeds most all year long, I don't need a big set-up - of large shop lights.

Under the shelves I installed two small fixtures - with 24 inch bulbs. These are a bit hard to find when replacing the bulbs, but Home Depot has them. It's always a good idea to take along the old bulb, as they all begin to look alike once you get there.

This set-up has worked fine for my small operation. When not in use, I just ignore them. This winter when fermenting sauerkraut in that same cool pantry, I used them to warm the fermenting kraut so it worked faster.

Not necessary to buy anything fancy, plants like flourescent lights no matter what color they are.
