Picking tomatoes just starting to turn red?

My tomato plant leaves really got brown fast this year, so I started picking the tomatoes that were just starting to turn red. I put them on paper towels on the dining room table to ripen. Then I was reminded that some of them always start to rot there. I thought maybe I should put some bright lights on them, but read I shouldn't do that. Any suggestions on how to avoid them rotting, while they're still pretty firm? Also.....a big tree of ours just fell on my garden and the tall electric fence around it....onto some of the tomato plants.......so I went out and picked all of them red and reddish tomatoes. (It really tore our great electric fence down, but at least it wasn't earlier in the season. Plus, at 76 with a body that hurts, I was going to go smaller next year.) Anyhow.........any suggestions on ripening these tomatoes without them rotting first? Thanks!
