I've had success with some bulbs by just keeping them in the bags in a cool dark place- more like fridge temps than freezing- and potting up up in late March/early April and sort of forcing them before planting them out at the end of April/beginning of May.
Now granted, I did this so I could be guaranteed blooms for my May wedding last year. But it worked so well with grape hyacinths that I picked up more when they were on clearance to plant in blocks of them to finish a border in my yard.

Try the big box stores or any local nursery. I had a lady at Ace hardware give me about 100 free 4" pots. Trays cost 25 cents. We have a recycling/garbage site that saves pots and gives them away. Some times I find them at thrift stores. Can you trade pots for bulbs with a friend? Also try a local garden club.

Bulbs are best not kept unplanted over winter. You've already splurged a bit to buy hundreds of bulbs, so why not also buy some bulk potting soil and more containers of various sizes? Plus, you can plant 'em tightly together, then replant after bloom.

I agree with Elmer. In fact, if there is a warm spell, you should try to plant them shallowly and tightly together and then top them off with the potting soil. After they are finished with flowering, you can dig them up and replant them in their permanent spots.

Some more precision: by digging up after bloom, I and most everyone else here do not mean right after bloom but after the leaves have gone brown (about 6 weeks after bloom, maybe more). I'm sure most are very aware of this, but just in case I thought I should mention it.

If the ground is very hard to dig in, due for example to cold winter temperatures and freezing, then this may help: On a day when the temperature is enough above freezing for water to run smoothly through a garden hose, you can use the water to soften the ground. I start by watering the ground from the start, then digging down as much as I can without undue strain, then adding more water, and letting the water seep down to further soften the ground, then dig some more, and repeat as necessary. Eventually, I manage to get down far enough.

thanks everyone for your suggestions. I was able to plant a bunch yesterday since it was almost 40. Some of the top crust was still frozen, but I was able to take my garden spade and lift that up to plant the bulbs. I just hope I got them deep enough.
