I do add the lime & micro-nutrients to the soil that is largely (2/3) mineral. I don't always use controlled release fertilizer, but on plants I do, it is much better to incorporated it in the soil at potting time instead of top dressing. Release rates are much more even with it incorporated.

Yes, Turface is actually a product used on athletic fields and golf courses to promote drainage. However, nothing will be effective for improving drainage in clay soils unless the water has a place to flow to, away from roots.
