I keep them in pots indoors in a bright window. Then I take cuttings in the early spring, and cut back the originals before putting them back out. They fill out again nicely. Works well, and it's nice to have them blooming indoors in the winter. I have read about keeping them in dormancy, but don't have much experience with that.

My mother always hung her bare root geraniums upside down in the basement for the winter. They would go dormant and look totally dead. In spring she would repot them up and they would magically come alive.

I tried this approach about 20 years ago when I first arrived in Colorado and they did not magically come alive. They just died over the winter. I think that we just don't have humidity in the air to keep them going.

So now I winter my geraniums in the pots inside but in a very cool partially sunny spot (basically they are in my basement in the window wells.) I water them lightly about once a week but do not feed them. The beginning of January, I cut them all back to about 3 inches. Some of them are nothing more than sticks. I repot them and start watering and feeding them regularly.

I start new plants from the cuttings. Starting cuttings is easy to do. Strip off all the leaves except for the top one or two leaves. Cut down each stalk so you have two or three eyes left (an eye is where the leaf used to attach to the stalk.) Make certain that at least two eyes are under the soil. Keep them watered well and give the plants some light. Roots will grow from the eyes and you will have new plants.
