Oley: if you are referring to starting transplants indoors in a solless mix, yes I have, every year for many years. Every year I make up the mix making sure it is good and damp and fill cell packs with it. Then I tamp it down firmly with my fingers in the individual cells such that it will not sink over the weeks ahead leading up to transplanting out doors. Make holes for the seed 1/8 - 1/4" deep in the firm mix with the eraser end of a pencil and add the seed to the holes. Cover the holes by scraping over some of the mix, usually from the edges to amply fill the holes and very lightly tamp over the seed holes with a finger tip. If you have a mister nozzle for your hose, use it to soak the cells in until they are saturated to the point of dripping out the bottoms being very careful not to disrupt the seed in the cells, take your sweet time. Another option is to water in by soaking from beneath. This method has worked very well for many years. A dibble board would speed up the process, maybe someday I'll build one :)

I've read the seed needs light to germinate too,, must be precious little as it seems a seed 1/4" deep in my mixture would get little to no light, who knows.

Good luck,
Michael
