Something to start from seed right now?

Maybe for a fall crop? I end up with a lot less light in the Fall. The angle of the sun due to a small lot with trees along the lot line, always cut back on the light. So I don't normally grow a good fall crop. Is August 1st too late to get something growing before the light is not enough?

I just (Friday 7/24) sowed four 10' rows of bush beans for a fall harvest in late September to early October. These are 52 DTM yellow filet beans called Goldilocks. I'll probably have to water them alot as it seems the rain may not cooperate much in August. They won't start flowering until early to mid September and hopefully the heat will decrease by then. Beans might appreciate the shade.

    1. I see you up in Mass? I'm at about the same latitude as LoneJack and plant fall crops during my short seeding and transplants window of Aug 23-27. Mostly boring veggies such as collards, turnips carrots, beets (all seed), and broccoli & cabbage transplants. All of these can withstand a frost ok, down to 25-27F for a short time. I understand about the day light hours, my fall crops are located in the most full sun area of the garden. Trees down here cast a long shadow soon enough. Although it's not frost proof I might plant lettuce this time around ;-)

I sowed beets about two weeks ago. Carrots and peas are other fall crops. Turnips, too.

Jack - Bush beans.....I usually grow pole beans when I do and only start them at the beginning of the summer. I forgot the bush beans grow so much faster.

Vgkg - We eat a lot of Collards which I'd have more room for than the other Brassicas.

Porkchop - We eat a lot of beets too.

Good ideas! I have a small lot, about 1/4 of an acre, and the only place I have full sun is in the front and only about a 15x20ft bed. EVERYTHING I want to grow that needs full sun has to go in that bed. And I grow shrubs and perennials too. I do use it for Tomatoes and Peppers which works great.

Plus we have a huge rabbit problem here and we haven't found a reliable solution for that yet. I have resorted to using a raised bed on legs to keep veggies off the ground. I tried it along my front walkway in full sun last year but it was just in the way, so I've had to move it to the back where it might get 5-6hrs of sun, even at the height of summer. It's vacant right now, has potting soil 3/4 of the way full and I have some fresh new compost in my bin I can add to it and try something. I think I'll try half with bush beans and beets and Collard Greens in the other half.

This year, I'm going to track the sun on that area. See just when the angle of the sun reduces the sun there.

    Thanks for the ideas!
