brass containers

Hi everyone, I have a beautiful gardenia in my yard with full sun and very hot weather. I am in Mexico City and right now it is very hot. My gardenia is full of buds and growing very nice, one problem is some of the leaves seem to have like a fungus, they turn yellow with green spots. Also I have it in a brass container. Is that ok, is there anything I can do to avoid the leaves from turning yellow, every month I put coffee grinds on top of the soil for acidity. Is there anything else I can do. Please answer my two questions (brass and fungus?) Thanks

    Hi.

Doesn't anybody know about my questions. I am afraid that since I already potted my gardenia in the brass container if that is bad I already screwed it. Please advise. Thanks and have a nice weekend

I honestly don't know if growing plants directly into a brass container will cause a problem or not. I assume that the pot has drainage holes in the bottom, right?

As long as your potting medium is very fast draining, I guess I see no problem. The metal is likely to conduct a lot of heat to the roots, and that might be an issue for your plant.

Used coffee grounds do not impart any acidity to the soil (the acid is in the COFFEE and not the grounds after percolating). I'd suggest a soluble fertilizer for acid loving plants.

Thanks very much for your answer. The only last question I have in this matter is I keep on getting some yellowish leaves, they do not turn totally yellow but seem like a fungus which I know is not since I am spraying my gardenia every week with some anti fungus spray. Please advise

I personally don't use metals of any kind for planters because of the reactivity and conductivity issues with heat, water, and fertilizers (and the potting mix) which can affect the roots of any plant. You can insulate or line the planter with plastic (or coir) or do double potting to avoid these potential problems, however.

How long have you owned or been caring for this gardenia?

When did you plant it in the brass container and what size is it roughly? Under what circumstance or about when (what changed circumstance and how soon: change in temperature, location, sun exposure, growing medium, moisture, or use of fungicide, fertilizers, and etc.) did the yellowing with green spots starts?

Is the yellowing on the upper area (young new growth) or the lower parts of the gardenia? Can you give a more detailed description of the yellow leaves with green spots?

    Are the buds affected?

What kind of potting soil did you repot the Gardenia in, and what kind and NPK ratio of fertilizers and are you using?

What is the average temperature and the sunlight exposure (N/E/W/S) for the gardenia?

How have you been watering the gardenia?

Why are you applying fungicide weekly if you are not sure it's a fungal infection? Are you following treatment directions? Do you see any improvement since?

People may be able to answer your question better if you can show pictures of the gardenia (both close up and overall views). If not, you can also bring the Gardenia to your local garden center and ask.
