If your talking about placing your potatoes on the ground and then adding a thick layer of straw and then at the end of the season removing the mulch to harvest your potatoes without digging? should work great!

By the way just make sure you have good soil underneath them and keep well watered.

I plant my potatoes this way every year.

I'll have extra straw this year and've been thinking of giving this a try but jeez - it just seems too easy! I remember Len's pics of when he did it and have been ruminating about it ever since.

Does it HAVE to be straw? Could you use shredded leaves I wonder? I have tons of those!

g'day joe,

we use this method each year, see our instant potato patch pic's on our site.

Alys, no you don't need straw, many things will work...I use moss that a neighbor gives me.

THANKS FOR ALL THE INFORMATION.

I THINK I'LL GIVE IT A TRY.

I did it one year and the potatoes did well. I liked the ease of harvesting until the copperhead slithered out just ahead of where I was working - so use caution if you're in a rural area
