Purple corn. (maize Morado)

Anyone ever grow Purple Corn? I've looking over the net about it and can only find info about it being made into a Herbal drink.

If you never heard of it, its some Ancient heirloom corn thats been grown by the people in the Peruvian Andes for thousands of years. (Aztecs?) Least to say this variety goes back even before the Spanish Conquistadors.

I have Purple corn in my possession and put 30 seeds down in some pots to germinate. I'm just wondering if anyone knows the Maturity date of this corn? How tall does it get?

etc.

I can't find any info on this. I really think this variety of corn is very rare. Info is very bleak on it, least from the internet venue.

    Lazyhat,
I don't really know anything about maiz morado (purple corn) but you can get the seeds at:
    tradewindsfruit.com
    or Redwood City http://www.iterasi.net/openviewer.aspx?sqrlitid=fbqdfhl0dukpjw50efzqaw

This is an ancient Peruvian corn which would involve the Incas not the Aztecs (Mexico).

teauteau Please examine the photo. ;) LOL
oh so its Incas, oops well I dont know my history to well of that area.:P

So no one knows The maturity days of this plant? Or how tall it gets.. Well I'll hope for the best. Hopefully raccoons dont like it. Its a Dent Corn I think. I also plan to save some seed from it so I'm planting at least 30 corn. is that good enough to prevent inbreeding depression in corn?

Cornell reports that "Hopi" purple corn is 80-90 days to maturity.

Because it seems to be historically from higher elevations I would expect short "Days to maturity".

Hey Lazyhat; You need at least 200 plants to prevent inbreeding depression in corn.

25-50 plants is the Minimum amout of plants that you need to minimize, not eliminate inbreeding depression. If you only start with the minumum # you won't have enough plants after "Rogueing out" off type plants.
The 25-50 Minumum is with healthy, true to type plants.
Again this number is to minimize inbreeding depression.

I thought I would update this thread on the progress of my purple corn. Here they are 4 months later.
There huge! I think one is pushing 15 feet. one of them has 3 ears on it. Still waiting on a fully developed ear...

(Very old thread, I know. Sorry.) Lazyhat, did the maiz morado ever tassel and develop mature ears? I bought some seed, but I'm not sure it'll produce anything here. I live about 10 lat. degrees south of Canada, so I reckon that'd cause tasseling a bit earlier. (Shorter days and all that.)

I grew it in Hutchinson, Minn. some years back when we had a very long growing season ( seventy plus degrees all the way into Oct.)

I got two fully developed ears out of it.

It is a 180 day corn, so up north must be in the ground by early may at the latest and hope for no frost till Nov.

I have been trying to grow Purple Corn ( Maize Morado) for a few years now, in the passed i seeded directly in the garden the first week in May, by late October they've tasseled and had immature ears, the plants were about 8 ft. tall the frost came and I lost my small crop.
This year I started the seeds indoors in March, transplanted them to the garden in May, by now the plants are huge over 7 feet tall, no tassels yet. So I wait to see what happens.

I grew a few plants last year that I planted in June but it was not until November that the 11 foot tall plants have any visible ears. I was able to get a few mature grains from one stalk and planted this year in May. Today I measured a stalk at just shy of 9feet, but it is August 19th in Northeast Ohio. Who knows if the growing season will last into November this year.
