Some wallpaper was made to be removable, you may get lucky- try an inconspicuous area.

Couple ideas- try this in reverse! Add wood panels over the wallpapered wall! It'll give it a sense of humor and a artful look...


or (and this may not be for everybody) to me, peeling wallpaper can look really chic and cool--

If you really hate the wallpaper and plan on living there for a few years, it might be worth your while to remove it. I moved into a house that had wallpaper in almost every room. Some of it came off easily, others took some time and patience. I'm sure you can google tips for how to remove wallpaper - but here are some tips that worked for me:
Scoring the wall paper so you make tiny cut marks through out so the water can seep in. Use a spray bottle or large car washing sponge and soak the wall paper a few times times before trying to remove. Add a bit of fabric softener to the water!
Steamers- you can rent these...but if you have a clothes steamer, that might do the trick.
