Forgive such a basic question, but how does the door lock and stay closed?

Stephanie, this is Johanna from Foret Doors. You can install a mortise lock or a deadbolt to open the door with a key from the outside and a lever/knob to latch/unlatch it from the inside.

To keep the clean look are you using a deadbolt in the picture? Therefore every time you want to go out you have to turn a latch and if you are coming in from the outside use a key? Have clients wanting to use the handles but struggling to make it work with an 8' door requiring a multi-point locking system.

Multi-point locking systems are similar to mortise locks, they have the deadbolt and latch on one piece. To get the look you want you have to bore the door for the key hole on both sides of the door and bore the door on the interior side only for the knob/lever to latch /unlatch the door.

This is correct unless you add a small knob on the exterior side of the door to unlatch it from the outside.
