Increased seeding depth for small seeds?

The standard recommendation for direct sowing depth is three times the seed diameter, which for small vegetable seeds means covering with 1/8" to 1/4" of soil. At that depth, the covering soil can easily be washed away by rainfall or settling, exposing the seeds to displacement by rain or wind, drying out, birds, or rodents.

This study suggests that small seeds can be planted 1/2" to 1" deep with no germination loss. This would also have the advantage that the bed can go longer between waterings, and most plantings could be watered in and left alone.

Does anyone have experience with the effect of deeper sowings (1/2" to 1") on germination?
