I planted three container tomatoes Memorial Day weekend in a mix of miracle grow potting soil and mixed in a little cow manure. They are bigger than the ones growing in the garden and have lots of green tomatoes on the vines. Should be any time they start turning red. I also used the same mixture with my carrots, doing nicely too.

I use a mix of about one third to one half municipal compost to the remainder Pro-Mix BX, plus some time release fertilizer. You could add some lime too, but the municipal compost around here has a good amount of both calcium and magnesium. I think an 18-20 gallon toteful is about $1.25, a scoop dumped into the back of your pickup truck is $13.00. Pro-Mix BX w/mycco is around $18 for a 3.8 compressed bale, which expands to about 7.5 cu ft, or about 60 1-gallon pots.

I took the easy, lazy (and expensive) route of buying everything from Gardeners.com. (I swear I don't work for them, but I do keep mentioning them on this forum.) They have a "self-watering container mix" that consists of sphagnum peat, perlite, vermiculite, and limestone. I added in a bit of their slow-release fertilizer and so far so good. I love the way this stuff feels. So much nicer than the stuff I got at the hardware store.
