I'd consider a small rose, such as an Olivia Rose Austin or one of the patio types of roses - these do extremely well in pots - have a word with your local garden center - they will know best what rose will perform in your area of the country.

I live in Goleta a little less than 2 miles as the crow flies from the coast. I grow >90% of my 250 roses in pots, with their ultimate permanent size being 15 gallons. Most do great, although over the years I've had to give away a few that wanted to grow too big, e.g. Marilyn Monroe, Memorial Day, The McCartney Rose, Evelyn, etc. There are a number of newer roses that folks have reported growing crazy huge, so it's always a good idea to check with folks here. Many folks at La Sumida are pretty knowledgeable. BTW, their bare root selection in January is spectacular, and much less expensive than buying from their potted rose field!

How about Ping Lim’s rose “ True Love”? It stays small and it’s so pretty!

@susan9santabarbara we are probably nearly neighbors! Maybe I just need to get your advice about growing roses in containers. I am a beginner, and the roses I've put in the ground are doing well with minimal intervention from me.

The two Moonlight Romanticas in large containers on my patio had powdery mildew (improving) and then one recently had really bad sawfly damage. I love how they look on the patio so if there's a way to keep them there I'm all ears! I water almost daily and feed every week or every other week with Grow More Magnum rose food. They don't look bad, I guess, I just feel link they would be happier in the ground.
