Good soil and germinating

Well, I spent an hour today double digging a 17x4 foot bed. (Not really a bed, just a flat area of dirt that I dug into) About a month ago, I had placed a bunch of old straw that has been sitting in our barn for probably 7-10 years now.

As I was digging, in some spots of the bed there must have been 2 or 3 earthworms crawling around! :) Do you think this is just because of the straw or is it a combination of straw and the dirt. It wasn't totally covered with straw, just one side was covered and the other half was exposed.

Also, now that I just planted 6 varieties of vegetables, I'm hoping things will Germinate in 7-14 days. A couple of days will be at 2 C as a low (36 F), and then the rest will range from 2 C to about 13 C (56 F).
