Pea Germinations

Hi all -

Did anyone else purchase the Burpee Super Sugar Snap peas this year?

For the story - last year I planted Dwarf Gray Sugar peas. I had half a packet left over. So, I planted one each in the standard black 6-packs for a total of 72 Dwarf Gray Sugar peas.

In a matter of eight days of keeping them on the porch with temperatures ranging from 45 degrees at night to 83 degrees during the day, 61 of them have sprouted - 85% germination on year-old seed that was stored in the freezer.

This year I purchased some Burpee Super Sugar Snap peas so we can have the plumper peas with the edible pod. Before planting, I also kept them in the freezer.

I planted 99 of the Super Sugar Snaps on the same day as the Dwarf Gray Sugar. In a matter of eight days, only 10 of them - yes 10 - have sprouted. So that is basically only 10% germination on brand new seed.

I wasn't sure if there was something wrong with their seed this year or if they are more picky with growing medium, temperature, or if they just take longer to germinate - although that doesn't make sense because 10 have sprouted already.

Just getting some opinions if possible please. Otherwise, I'll plant the other snap pea variety I got from FedCo seeds (Sugarsnap snap pea).

    Weird

I've planted Burpee Super Sugar Snap for years, without problems. Last year and this year almost none came up, almost total failure.

I think I bought Sugar Snap 2 or something like that from Burpee, but I can't remember off the top of my head. I planted them a few weeks ago, but the weather has been crazy (I planted them before the freak snow storm) and they are just barely poking through. So far it looks like I've got some pretty good germination.

I have said peas, and so far, about 7 of the 15 I planted have germinated

I planted the sugar snap and had very few come up as well. Now to be fair I am noobie on gardening, but I do notice this year all the burpee seeds I have planted have not performed as well as other brands (johnny's select, seed savers, etc)

I am wondering if burpee has "jumped the shark"...

Hmm.. so maybe I'd better take the cues from all of you and just re-plant the other peas then.

It isn't worth going back to getting $1 back from the store - but apparently there are some big problems with at least this variety of pea this year. I wonder if Burpee even tested germination on these since there are laws that require a certain germination rate - otherwise you can't sell them.

Interesting - I've got Super Sugar Snap, Sugar Ann, and Sugar Sprint planted on the same day. Super Sugar Snap is doing terrible compared to the other two.
All three packets were shipped in Feb. of this year.

Last year I planted Burpee Super Sugar Snap along side my regular Sugar Snap and I found the Super Sugars had about a 50% germination rate, compared to the regular sugar snap at 90%. However, I really liked the Super Sugars for taste and because the vines don't get as tall.

So, this year I germinated indoors in peat pellets and got nearly 100% germination of the Super Sugars. As soon as they sprouted I planted them out to the garden (I peeled the netting off the pellets first) and they are now about 8" high.
Of course this isn't practical if you are doing a lot of peas, but I only planted a 5 foot row, which was 24 peat pellets.

My experience with pea germination is that it is always iffy out in the garden. Last year I also tried Kelvedon and not a single one came up. My new method ensures good germination - I will do this again every year.

Check out the tip for germinating peas at the attached link. I tried it this year (half in vitamin C; half in folic acid - the "c" seeds near the house/close; the "f" seeds fartheset from the house) and the germination was really good for all varieties I planted. I didn't plant a control group, so this is not a very good experiment, but I thought I'd share in case it might be useful to someone.

    potterhead -

I planted all of mine in the black six-packs with some potting soil mix same kind of situation as you with starting in the peat pellets.

Last year I planted the Dwarf Gray Sugar peas directly into the garden - but the seed was new then. So this year I wanted to start them all inside to ensure they germinated instead of wasting space in the garden for those that didn't come up.

I planted them for the first time this year. I have over 90% germination in a raised bed. In fact I thinned them a few days ago. However, they took around (don't have my notes in front of me) 15-20 days to germinate, I assume because the soil was cool. (in the 40's most of the time)

I'm going to give the seeds until probably this Sunday. If they still don't sprout well, I'll fall back to the Oregon Sugar Pod II from FedCo. This has set me back a bit and hopefully I'll still get a decent crop of peas.

Pretty ridiculous I think. I've always had trouble germinating onion seed - but even the onion seed had a 70% germination rate. Right now the Super Sugar Snap is 10%.

Ooops. My apologies. My Super Sugar Snaps were from Park Seed, not Burpee. Sorry about that.
However, the first of the peas didn't start showing above ground until 16 days and they really were popping out at about 20+ days.
