squirrels ??? now what

I have noticed that the squirrel population in my yard has gotten bigger i plan on planted stuff in containers and dont want these guys eating it before me any ideas...they have already dug up some of my bulbs right out of the containers i heard chili powder works any of you have ideas

Sprinkling chili powder, or cayenne powder helps. But only for a while. We had fewer problems with squirrels when we had cats. I have tried just about everything short of trapping and shooting. Nothing really works. The squirrels just keep digging. My approach now is to accept what I can't (or am not willing since I won't kill them) change. It's very difficult.
