Look at Lowes / Home Depot for clearance sales. I just got some Orchids from them for 1/2 price. Orchids are not a good starter plant.

Skip the cactus at Lowes. Homedepot here had very nice cacti. They are a pretty easy plant and most like the window sill.

A desert rose likes a sunny window and might even bloom. Ficus are a good choice, but often larger. Spider plants, Croton, Aloe, Jade.

Hoya plants are also fun, I just started to collect them.

How about Holiday Cactus - Thanksgiving, Christmas, etc.? They work well in smallish pots, flower A LOT (although they're not fragrant - at least mine aren't). I have one in the kitchen window, it's blooming now, and makes me smile whenever I look at it. So pretty!
