sawdust for paths

With the price of oat straw at $9 a bale plus transportation, I'm looking for an alternative to using in the paths of my "raised" bed veg garden. The beds are not surrounded by wood or any type of restraints, just heaped higher than the paths. I have found a source of free clean softwood sawdust that I am using for my berries, and I am thinking of trying that in my paths. I do have problems with slugs and red ants in my garden, and do not want to exacerbate that, but I read somewhere that sawdust actually helped with the slug issues. Does anyone have any experience, pro or con, with sawdust?
