Help with Tudor Exterior!

last modified: 14 years ago
We purchased our home 4 years ago and it is time to paint the exterior. While the long-term plan includes an architect and extensive remodeling to make the 1960's additions blend, we hope to keep it simple this time around. We will also consider new exterior materials. I can't wait to ditch the metal door! Our goal is to make the home more attractive and inviting. The previous owners installed the light tan vinyl windows, so it seems we are veering from the "Tudor purist" path. We fully renovated the interior, and we now look forward to enhancing the exterior thanks to your help.

I think the house don't face north.it is at Z5 or Z6.Change the stair,a "S" curve is nice.Add a patio under the door and the stair, the border should be fluid line.Add some plant combinations such as J-maple,hydrangeas,hostas,azaleas...for curb appeal.paint the wall blue-back colour, between the brick is white. The sidewalk should be "S" line than hard "C" line.you could check in my pics in other thread.

This is just my personal preference, but I live in a city with lots of 1920's Tudor architecture, and I always find myself more attracted to the Tudors with a lower contrast between the stucco and wood trim. They strike me as more subtle and elegant. So I'd recommend a combination that darkens the stucco a bit to a putty or pale olive (maybe a color similar to your stone turret) and lightens the wood trim to a dark olive or lighter brown shade. I also love reverse tudor color schemes with lighter woodwork against slightly darker stucco. Here are a few examples of both with this lower contrast effect:

I think a great way to update Tudor is to make the trim light and the siding dark.

Hi Brenda, your house has so much curb appeal there's really not much to be done at the moment, perhaps some minor cosmetic items. I wouldn't suggest doing too much especially if your house is located in a more traditional neighborhood.

Thanks all for the great ideas. Lower contrast, possible swap of light with dark, and shutters on front window. I should add that the roof is slate so I should tie that in a bit. Time for paint swatches. Also I have attached an image from our first winter...hard to imagine with the heat we have now.

Just wondering what you ended up doing with your house, and if you have pictures, as we are in a similar situation right now.

Hi! I am ironically logging into this discussion again to share it with our recently contracted design professional. Cgartke, I will post more when we know our direction and I will share photos when it is finished. In which part of the country do you live?

Shutters would look great on the front windows! Depending on the theme you want to go with, for a more rustic feel you could choose Board and Battens, or go with a traditional Panel or Louver. At Timberlane we have all styles and options available. Below are some examples of our shutters. Be sure to visit our profile and our website for more info!

Brenda I love your house. I think changing out the windows would create the best impact. The main curb window should certainily mimic the window in Charmean Neithart Interiors 1st picture.

Here is the house last fall after phase 1 completion. Still need to do shutters on the front window to increase its presence.
