Potato 'Hilling'

I'm the proud owner of some beautiful potato plants out in my 2nd year garden (1st time with potatoes) and I think I'm ready to "hill" them. My only question is that the soil outside of my garden is very heavy with clay and I am worried if I use even what accounts for "topsoil" from my land it will get too dense for potatoes to grow. I have a compost pile started this year but it will not be ready in time to hill. So my question is what are the alternatives? Could I just get potting soil and use that for this year? I am buying that stuff every other day for a lot of flowering bed projects anyhow. Any advice would be appreciated. The plants are doing so well I don't want to see the potatoes lost due to insufficient coverage. Thanks!
