That is the original historic finish that dates to c. 1850; the paint was extremely fragile, and, after a lab analysis, a unique preservation system was created and applied to stabilize it. Saving the finish also included many hours of intense labor by specialized craftsmen. I suppose you could paint your ceiling white and wait 160+ years but researching faux finishes would probably suggest methods with more timely results! While they weren't used for this project, we are big fans of milk paints. With appropriate expectations and application techniques, we seen some great results with them on other projects.

sand through white wash technique

As a retailer of authentic milk paint from Homestead House Paint it is nice to see that walls could be painted with milk paint to get a historic appearance if one does not already exist.

Would chalk paint with wax finish achieve this look.already have lots of 90 year old lumber that has never been painted or treated,from a one room schoolhouse.would like a dirty white look ,using Annie Sloan chalk paint with dark wax rubbed in and off in irregular pattern.tks

I am not sure about waxing a wall but would probably check with ASCP company if you have already stared your project. Good luck hope you post some pictures of your project.

This similar to our Decape finish and can be accurately reproduced however there would be many hours of labor.
