Pepper pollination indoors

Many of you were very helpful back in April when I asked about whether I should pinch peppers to make them bushy. Following your advice I did not.

Now I have healthy 18 inch pepper plants with flowers and a couple of tiny (1/2 ") embryo peppers. So it's looking good for actually getting something to eat.

My question this time is about pollination. Clearly they have got fertilised or they wouldn't have babies. But did my prodding with a paintbrush do it or do you think I am wasting my time and they can manage by themselves? Remember this is under glass - no wind, no insects.

BTW the control plants which are just outside the porch against a S facing stone wall are 8 " tall, pale and chilly-looking. No flowers yet even. The temp is around 57f and it's pouring with rain. No wonder they're miserable.
