Could you train them by tying them with rope to "move to a more spread out location? I have Montmorency and I find that it will sometimes self-prune, naturally killing branches that are too tight together. Optionally, you might be able to prune it partway, leaning it to the desired direction.

Sure, you can do this, it will help establishing the root system.

The tree is six years old, going on seven this year. It has a very strong trunk. Last year it hardly had any cherries, this year it is loaded with fruiting spurs so I am reluctant to prune the tree, as you can imagine. Both of the branches are parallel, so either one or the other should be removed.

Too bad you can't post a picture. Pie cherries do not need much pruning. If you have narrow crotches forming, or these two branches have less than 3 inches between them, you may want to remove one of them in stages, ie prune one about 50% to weaken it and take it out in a couple of years.

Thanks for the information. I thought I'd let the branch fruit, harvest, then remove the branch.

Dry weather is essential for stone fruit pruning , to not let diseases enter.
