Chipmunk

A friend wants to know how to get rid of a chipmunk that is eating her peppers (green). She doesn't want to kill it, just discourage it from coming back. My dad suggested Irish Spring (not sure why, forgot to ask). Would that work or is there something else?

Thanks!

Er, the Irish Spring thing was for deer. It doesn't work. Chipmunks like peanuts, so find a cheap source and they'll stay away from everything else. Sunflower seeds work too. Pepper spray that you can make from cayenne will work but washes off when it rains. Hope this helps.

Thanks! My dad does get his advice mixed up at times =). I've passed this onto my friend, so hopefully it will help her.

    Thanks again!

he might consider a small chipmunk havahart trap and remove the chipmunk.

I am not so much in favor of feeding them. It only increases the population.

Bye the way if he sees one chipmunk there is a good chance he has tons of them in his yard. These guys live in big groups in the neighborhood.

I agree with korey especially about feeding them and the increased population. I thought I only had a couple but after trapping them we caught 8. A neighbor down the block got something like 14 at last count. My grandma, who lives in a small town not far away was up to 15 on Friday.

My advice would be not to feed.

You should warn your friend it is against the law to relocate wildlife in most states, unless you release it somewhere else on your own property. Don't move chipmunks to a new territory it is just spreading disease and the other chipmunks will attack them.

The only way to really solve a chipmunk problem is fence in your garden completely including below ground level, or to kill them.

As you have seen chipmunks will eat peppers with gusto, I have seen them eat Thai peppers that would curl your toes, so homemade pepper spray may have limited success unless you used ground pepper powder and a lot of it. That stuff is for rabbits. Maybe the commercially available sprays are stronger.

    Do they also eat eggplants?

I have a bunch of chipmunks in my yard and I have noticed one of my eggplants have been nibbled on by something. I do see them eat my cherry tomatoes though, they seem to love that.

I have a cat who kills alot of them and I am planning to upgrade my fencing with a strip of those small spacing plastic fences along the bottom of my metal fence. A problem is I have alot of stone walls and they have really made use of these walls for homes and places to hide.

Thanks =). Both of us are kind of new (though I'm a downright beginner), and we both want to be humane if possible.

She's worried that it might also get to her tomatos, though I don't know anything abut chipmunks. I'll pass on this advice, as I know she appreciates whatever advice she can get =).

    Thanks again!

    Trant,

"...and I am planning to upgrade my fencing with a strip of those small spacing plastic fences along the bottom of my metal fence."

You do know that chipmunks are good climbers? Chances are that your fence upgrade will not solve your chipmunk problem. And there's not much in your garden that they won't eat. I guess they never bothered my onions.

You are so right! They are excellent climbers, usually only for escape or food though. They don't like to do it say....like squirrels do.

We've seen them go up the tree to the squirrel feeder, up the sheppard's hook to the bird feeder and up the down spout when we tried to trap one.

I'm not sure a fence will do the job.

I wish there was a non-lethal way of getting rid of chipmunks. We have tried just about everything short of offing the little critters. I was surprised to learn that chipmunks will come right up on your patio, climb into the sweet basil container, break off basil leaves and munch them right in front of you. And they eat gerbera daisies. Ours daisies were mysteriously disappearing, but the stems were left intact. Looking out the kitchen window one afternoon, I saw a chipmunk behead a daisy and sit munching on it. I used to think chipmunks were cute but now I know they are pests and no friend of gardeners. Just like squirrels...

    It's them or us.

I tried the "dive&die" bucket. Complete failure because my CT munks would hang by their back legs, stretch their bodies and gobble the seeds from the water. Angry, but it was way tooo funny to watch. Anyway, after many attempts at altering the "dive&die", I gave up and ordered RAT ZAPPER ULTRA. Worth every penny!! During the day, chipmunks (avg 2 day), night, mice. The device is humane as critters don't know what hit'em AND it's clean and easy to discard the bodies without having to touch them..... When the light blinks RED, just dump'em and bury. I look forward to the light blinking red.... dark side of me, I guess. After having these munks with racing stripes eat my expensive plants, they had to go! You can buy right from mfg or ebay.... got mine on ebay.

The 5 gallon "bucket of death" definitely worked for me - the bucket has to be big enough, and only half full. Unless you have mega-chipmunks it should work. Mine was normal sized. ;)

I tried offering the little pest sunflower seeds before killing him, but he still ate all of my squash and corn seeds. Now I'll have to buy cukes to make pickles, sigh...
