Drip irrigating a small orchard

I have about 40 fruit trees (mostly apples and pears) in a grid pattern, which I would like to drip irrigate. I've used drip tape in my annual gardens, but wasn't sure what the best approach would be for fruit trees, spread over a larger area.

The trees are more or less in a square area, 25-30' between trees. The trees vary in size from a 10-15 year old ones to quite s few 1 year old ones. So I am looking for an emitter system which can be expanded as the trees grow, and can handle the different water needs for both big and small trees. The land itself is sloped in three directions.

I was thinking along the lines of using drip tape in a spiral around each tree. As the trees grew I could then add to the spiral, increasing the amount of water for that tree. This would also allow me to put trees of different sizes on the same leg of irrigation header, with the length of the spiral adjusting the amount of water each tree gets.

I'm not sure how this idea would work, or if drip tape is the best form of water emitters to use for permanent plantings such as this.

Any suggestions/ideas/comments?
