monster hail storm!

Wow,

Yesterday at about 5:30 pm we had a monster hail storm that rolled through. Everyone is saying it may be the worst one anyone has seen in this area. I think most of my trees went through ok. I appears I did lose most of a crop of orient pear though. They just had huge holes ripped right through them and severeral were knocked in half. There was some damage to others but mostly the orient. I hope that is the worst of it.

If you have fireblight there, watch out! Hail can bring on horrible blight attacks. If you have had fireblight and have any streptomycin, get out right now and spray those guys.

Scaper: Sorry to hear about that. But sounds like it could have been worse. I've seen hail so bad in W TX that all the bark was stripped off the upper side of the limbs. But usually it just marks up the fruit.

Amarillo is having a blizzard today. They've taken the 20F to 80+F and back to 20F three times this month. Don't you just love Texas!!!

At noon today it is 19F in Amarillo with heavy snow and 41mph wind. I'll guarantee their fruit trees are blooming or past bloom. In Alpine it is 40F. They are saying 32F tonight but I'd bet on mid to low 20s.

Y'all have strange weather down there. I'm almost directly north and it was 31F at noon.

According to one forecaster, it's supposed to get down to 18F Sat. night here. After looking the peaches over again, a lot are in pink/bloom, but some are still in the calyx stage. Should have a small percentage survive, but it ain't gonna be pretty. Apples are in tight cluster, so they're toast.

olpea: Hopefully your losses will be less than you expect. Before bloom it takes pretty cold temp to get a total loss. During my 30 yrs in Amarillo it was usually the second or third damaging freeze that caused a total loss. Thing is places like Amarillo probably have another freeze or two coming yet this spring. Hope you make a crop!!

    Fruitnut,

Thanks for the nice thoughts. This freeze seems reminiscent of the April 07 freeze. Fortunately, fruit development isn't as far along. Normally our freezes this late are pretty light. Guess I'm just wining. There's still a chance it won't get quite so cold.

I covered the tomatoes in the 2 coldframes with old blankets so they are not touching the glass since the forecast is for 35F tonight and 33F tomorrow night. Put 5 gallon buckets over the tomatoes I've planted thus far and covered the strawberries which are in full bloom with lots of berries the size of my little finger. Also covered my English peas that are in bloom with 2" peas on them. Covered my new blueberries and one lonely amaryllis that is already blooming and my dozen Aloe Vera plants.

Everything has leafed out or is leafing out which is very odd. Normally the crepe myrtles, lantana and cannas are later in coming out; strange year thus far.

Hey Olpea: maybe it will work out where MA nature does a peerfect fruit thinning job so you won't have to, just trying to look on the bright side. Our forecast here in N-C KS is for 29 Sat night, don't know why I'd be that much warmer than you on the same night.

    Hi Michael,

Yea, it doesn't make sense. Watched the weather news tonight and at that time, it was colder in parts of Oklahoma than here. It was the same way in the 07 freeze. At that time, I talked with some people from MN and it was warm there, while it got down to 17F here. For tomorrow one forecaster is now calling for 31F for the high and 16F for the low. Problem is we lose all the cloud cover Sat. night. Plenty of thinning going on.

Yesterday my sweet cherries were a beautiful white and in full bloom. This morning nothing but brown withered flowers. A low near 24F after months of mostly 70s and 80s.

    Sad to hear Fruitnut.

Pictures on the news showed parts of TX getting hammered with this winter storm. Incredible.

Western KS had 11F this morning, while here in east KS it was 34F. Tonight's our turn for the cold blast, although now they're predicting mid 20s, rather than teens.

We missed frost by a few degrees last night, but may get it tonight if these clouds don't break up and let the sunshine warm things up today.

Would especially hate to lose the tiny leaves, swelled buds, and baby fruits from my figs. Plus all the little plums, pears, and peaches. (Fingers crossed)
