Question about storing vegetables.

This summer/fall will be my first experiences vegetable gardening. Tonight I've been thinking about how I can store veggies once the winter months approach....especially root vegetables like onions, carrots, beets and potatoes, but also stuff like cabbages, etc.

I've heard mention in the past of storing veggies in the basement. I live on a lake so I don't have a basement. I have a crawl space. It stays relatively cool and dry down there. So I think it could work. It'll either be that or our unheated garage.

Anyway, I was wondering if I could successfully use a cooler for containment of the veggies (like a typical, large Coleman type cooler). I know from time to time we've seen evidence of critters in the crawlspace and garage, so I'd want to make sure that the veggies are safe and sound if I store them in either location. I think a cooler would do it. I just wonder if that would work OR do the veggies need better air circulation than a cooler can offer during storage????
