I plant garlic every fall. I separate the cloves, but I don't peel them.
I never tried growing them in summer.. Maybe they need winter chilling
to form bulbs..I'm not sure. I harvested mine 2 weeks ago, Nice, big
bulbs.

The garlic you just planted in zone 6 won't do much. Don't expect a lot. Garlic cloves should be planted in October in zone 6, covered with about 6-8 inches of straw mulch and harvested in July when the top two leaves are half green and half brown. Hope this helps. I don't know what the peeling will do to them but they will most likely not form cloves like they would if they were fall planted. They'll likely just plump into a bulb - like a small onion.

I'm not a very experienced garlic grower myself so someone may tell me I'm wrong... but I planted garlic last May and just got some bulbs (what survived being overrun by the tomato & cuke that is). I planted garlic in November and it's almost ready to harvest now.

If it were me, I would leave them be and see what happens. I'm in zone 7b/8a and there are times while harvesting one will break off...these grow new plants from each of the cloves over the Winter which I harvest the next year.
