I've been growing Ambrosia cantaloupe for several years, and like it a lot. But I'm curious about Charentais melons, which are a French variety of cantaloupe for which the melons are small but extremely flavorful. I'd like some wisdom about how gardening is different with those. BTW, I am in Texas, so we get wicked summer heat. Are Charentais amenable to that? Also, there is conflicting advice online about Charentais. At least one grower says that they should be planted where they get afternoon shade. Most others say they need LOTS of sun. Also, I regularly prop my Ambrosias on tunafish cans, to keep them off the soil. Regular canteloupe netting rots easily, I understand. But Charentais doesn't have netting. Can they sit on the soil like non-netted melons? Also, if I plant them nearby each other, will I have problems with cross pollination? Advice from people, especially in similar climates, would be appreciated.
