best loppers

I've often mentioned that Bahco makes my favorite pruning loppers and Rayrose just told me of a half price source for my favorite models, P160 SL90 (36" length) or P160 SL75 (30")

http://www.protoolwarehouse.com/Cat-19-1-429-2/loppers.htm?SortOrder=2

should bring you the page. First comment will give you the quick link if you don't want to copy and paste.

    Here's the link.

Here is a link that might be useful: bahco loppers

    Thanks,
I may try their pruners.I'm glad they have left hand. Brady

I'm not endorsing their pruners- their most expensive ones are too heavy for my taste although they are otherwise designed well. I also prefer pruners with harder steel blades.Felco also carries left handed with similar steel but probably a bit lighter.

I'm left handed but use a right handed model- I use both hands for pruning and my left hand for sawing.

Maybe the price was too good to be true. I received a notice that the order has been received, but after a couple of days, no confirmation of shipping or any notice that item is on back order.

I went ahead and ordered a pair of Bahco loppers 30". Rayrose, you should get a commission from Protoolwarehouse.

I also ordered one of their Bahco pruning saws. I read a review comparing Bahco saws to Silky and the guy who reviewed it liked the Bahco better. Don't know if it will stay sharp as long as the Silky, but the replacement blades sure are cheaper.

I've broken my Silky blade twice. Scott has also mentioned he broke his Silky, so even if they stay sharp longer, I don't know that the Silky really lasts any longer for me. The Silky does cut fast.

I really like my cheap Friscar loppers, but they are worn out. They're geared which makes easy cutting, but they don't get in as close as I'd like sometimes. Maybe the Bahcos will do a better job in that regard.

For those of you who have ordered by email, the loppers are not in stock, but they expect a shipment in 2-3 weeks. I always call, when I order something. If I can't speak to a live person, I don't place the order. They are supposed to email me, when the shipment arrives. I will post, when they email me. Of course, I'm getting mine first. LOL

My 30" loppers have been shipped, along with some other products I purchased- they were in stock. My shoulders are pretty sore from constant use of my 36" version- even though they are light.

It appears that the 36" model is the only one out of stock. I was incorrectly told that both were on back order.

I've now been told that Snap-on-Tools, which owns Bahco has now placed a minimum order of 5 on the 36" pruners. All of the others can be purchased individually.
Who the heck makes a decision like that.

I previously said their website doesn't work. I followed the lead of others and got my order placed by phone. I got 1 lopper and 2 pruners. On the pruners I got one expensive set for me and a cheap set for anyone what asks to borrow my pruners. :)

Rayrose, they must be the suppliers of AM Leonard, who I get a discount from as a contractor. I ordered the 36" from them but they informed me their supplier requires an order of 5. Now that you've been enticed by the great price how could you pay full price for the model you crave. I say go with the shorter lopper- it is the standard size for contractors around here. The only major advantage of the longer one is when your trees are over 12' tall.

I had no difficulty ordering on-line.

Amazon has them for $10 more w free shipping, but they won't have them for 3 weeks.

"I've now been told that Snap-on-Tools, which owns Bahco has now placed a minimum order of 5 on the 36" pruners. All of the others can be purchased individually.

That is nutty. If they sell the 30" individually, I can't understand why they wouldn't sell the 36" individually. They're going to lose a lot of sales because of that.

I'm pleased to hear SnapOn owns Bahco. SnapOn sells some of the best automotive hand tools available. Sounds like some of that quality is in Bahco as well.

What hedge trimmers do you guys recommend? I can't differentiate between the model numbers. What about for pruners?

As I've posted here recently, I'm a fan of ARS for hand pruners and I prefer their recently discontinued VS-(7,8 or 9)Z series, the numbers representing small, medium and large.

If you look for them there are some still available from various outlets.

ARS makes hand pruners with harder steal than most other manufacturers, which I like, but that particular model also feels great in my hand.

The ARS VS series is the new model that is readily available. I just spent the weekend pruning 80 rose bushes with the VS 9 model that I recently purchased.
These pruners are great. They made the job so much easier than with my old Leyat pruners. I couldn't get over how sharp they were. They went through1/2 inch canes like a hot knife through soft butter.

Rayrose, does the pruner open when you squeeze it?

Yes, but it has a catch that's hard to engage, when you want to close it.

Old pruners can be sharpened to like new or better. Omahaknife.com $4 ea. Cheaper then new pruners, although maybe not as exciting

As an update on Protool Warehouse, their on-line service seems inadequate. I received a couple of tools I'd ordered with an invoice that informed me the loppers and some pruner holsters were on back-order. That information should have been in the system when I originally ordered and certainly before I received this partial shipment.

Rayrose seems to have the right approach with them- speak to a person if you want information. I don't mind waiting if the order comes through as the discount is very substantial. Fortunately, the lopper I ordered is back-up and the holsters an experiment to see if plastic works better than leather. Leather tends to get deformed in the rain making it more difficult to slip the pruners into the holster.

I got shipping confirmation on 2 of my 3 items. Like you, I was ordering spares due to the discount, so no worry on delay.

regarding an earlier subject. I don't know how long ago snap-on purchased Bahco, but these great prices could be blow out specials of existing inventory due to the sale of the company. Being in retail myself, I cannot believe the profit margin is big enough that they could discount this much normally.

That would seem like a logical conclusion, but how to explain the "out of stock" status in this context? They expect shipment in 2-3 weeks according to their message. Who knows?

Does seem too good to be true, as I've already said, but the two tools I scored were a very good value- the sharpener kicks butt.

I got an email yesterday which said my 30" loppers and tree saw were shipped.

I agree it is puzzling Protoolswarehouse can sell them so cheaply. A lot of retail merchandise is a doubler (marked up 100% - like jewelry). But they are selling at about 50% of retail, which doesn't leave any margin.

I almost never purchase from the manufacturer, as they generally sell at suggested retail to protect their dealers, but the 50% discount offered by Protools, does seem too good to be true.

Turns out the 30" lopper I ordered are also on backorder. They didn't mention it in the email, but I got the saw without the pruners.

WELCOME will give an additional 10% discount...

Amazon just raised the price of the 36" inch model $14. So don't be surprized, if Protool does the same thing, when the new ones arrive.
Although I was assured by protool that this would not happen, who the heck wants to buy 5 loppers. The 36" Corona's are much cheaper and seem to get good reviews. How bout it Harvestman. Are Corona's any good?

How much was shipping from Protool?

I haven't used any Corona tools for decades. Chances are it won't cut like a Bahco as I've tried many other loppers that didn't, but if you are only pruning a few trees it doesn't make all that much difference. I'm carrying my lopper with me all day long, day after day all winter and into spring (I also prune most every day from July into mid Sept) so it pays for me to use the best tools.

One thing you should know, if you buy a Bahco it will probably be the last lopper you ever need- they are very hard for me to wear out.
