I struggle with this as well. We have a poor selection of materials here. Some people grow them in straight spaghnum peat moss. I try to put in some free compost I can get at times. This compost is very coarse but I'd rather have excess drainage than not enough. If you can find something light but stable to improve drainage of the peat moss I'd give that a try.
Hi berry Bob, In case fruitnut doesn't chime in,your peat moss will work.Maybe mix it with some perlite, vermiculite or pumice in about a 60/40 peat moss to one or more of those other things ratio. Some coir can be used also. Where's your location by the way? Brady
I am having success with 1/2 compost and 1/2 bagged azalea/camellia mix. If you can't find your ingredients. I understand there are some concerns around peat moss, as it is not a renewable resource. Which is very interesting to me, as my grandparents used to sell the peat on their farm in Canada. But, I can see how it is a finite resource for sure. So, for me, this mix seems to be working well.
Nobody around you sells pine nuggets? Regular pine nuggets in your driveway plus your car makes pine fines in no time. But maybe the pine mulch is an eastern thing.....
We can get Pine bark in the Northwest, sometimes it's mixed with Fir,which I think recently they designated a Pine,at least the Douglas Fir and works as mulch. Brady
I've grown potted blueberries in a mix of course sand and peat moss. You really have to pay attention to the water with peat moss, but it will work if you can control the moisture.
