I won a contest!

It was a draw and I won a $125 gift certificate to Hole's Greenhouses and Garden Centre. The prize was supposed to be for a water container garden, but they just sent me a gift card. What should I buy? :)

I was gonna do supplies, some soil, pots, but I thought maybe that was too boring...

Do you have the collection of Lois Hole's books?

get something you wouldn't ordinarily spend money on,
garden art or a good quality birdbath, or something like that.

A good quality bird bath -- I love that idea! My own birdbath is not so great. I think I'll spend some of that stimulus tax money on one.

Lois Hole's books? I don't have them. That would be good reading over the winter...

I've got 2 of her books, Lois Hole's Tomato Favorites, and Lois Hole's Vegetable Favorites. Maybe 160 pages give or take, and they do keep me occupied over the winter (along with Carolyn's book and my Reader's Digest Gardening book). I believe there's also Bedding Plant Favorites and Perennial Favorites books. $14.95 CDN (Printed in Canada $11.95 US - go figure)

Sometimes the seed catalogs just don't cut it...

and Congratulations!

Thanks! I had a recommendation on another board to buy $125 worth of venus flytraps and use them as a security system...

Venus flytraps are native here (North Carolina). Along the coast you can still see limited wild stands of them and native pitcher plants + sundews.

Unfortunately it's not as vast or imaginable as one would hope (at least the more publicly accessible sites) and they're not visited much because well...not too many people go to the beach to walk around in the forests 5-10+ miles inland. Shame...they're missing out. We got some great coastal plain forest stands that need to be enjoyed before non-natives deposited along the waterways deposit too much "crap" plants (like spreading cactus already becoming an issue) into the ecosystem.

wow...I almost forgot about those. Now I want to go buy a Venus Flytrap...lol...Are they hard to grow from seed? Are seeds even available for them?

Congrats! I agree with some of the others. Splurge. Buy something pretty for the garden, like a statue, wind chimes, pretty pots, something like that.

When you said you won a contest, I immediately thought of a Seinfeld episode. Glad to hear it wasn't that.

Nah, City Tomato would have been out before the contest was closed. LMAO
