The only thing Sekai Ichi (Second to None, I think) has going for it is that they get enormous, so it can be a fun apple to grow. I once asked a Japanese person, not an apple grower, about it and he didn't know what I was talking about so I wonder how many there are in Japan. I think your description as big and mild is correct if memory serves.
And yes some varieties are so late as to make you think they are dead. think Hudson's Golden Gem. What did you have to pay for a tree in a fifteen gallon pot? I am thinking of entering that trade. I wouldn't worry about pollinating it as you likely have something nearby. Do you have other early, middle and late blooming trees? Something should get it, it won't take much.

Alta: I've been growing SI for about 15 yrs. Have grown some up to 1.5lbs. One last yr was 18 inches around. I won't say that size is all it has going for it but many people might. My main negative is that it is not crisp. It's not that it is mealy but anything but crisp. It is sweet with good flavor. Size is the main reason I've kept it but I enjoy eating one, or half of one.

You will have no trouble setting fruit even thou it is supposed to be a sterile triploid. It has always set way too many fruit for me. You must thin to about one apple every 18-24 inches to get the biggest fruit.

One thing about Sekai Ichi is that it doesn't work with ziploc bagging. It gets scorch burns when doing the ziploc bagging. All my other apples work well with ziploc bagging, except that one. As to the taste, quite acceptable.

Thanks for all the information on the apple tree. It should be fun to grow and fruit. IÂll plant it near my neighborÂs Granny Smith apple tree, which seems to be a really late bloomer as well, and hope for pollination.
Geraldo, the tree cost about the same as an evening out for two, dining and theater. Hopefully it will feed us all a lot longer than an evening.

I got mine (Sekai Ichi) from a scionwood exchange and it was grafted to Granny Smith. Once established in your area, it has quite a nice bloom overlap with most of my apples. This year it bloomed exactly at the same time as my Jonagold, Empire, Grannysmith. The only very early blooming one that I have is the Golden Dorsett. I suspect that Sekai Ichi is self-fertile. At one season, it was the only one that bloomed at that time and yet set a lot of fruits, but I could be wrong, as there are other apple trees from neighbors.

I have eaten various kind of apple over the years. My favorite is Pacific Rose. It is nice sweet flavor and crisp. I still unable to locate Sekai lchi apple around Washignton State yet. Hopefully, it as good as Pacific Rose.

They're out of stock at maplevalley orchard above, however they do have 7 scions left. The picture there seems to indicate a boron shortage where that tree grew. However if you go to the USDA site

the apple pictured looks much better.Their report states: harvest season early October, with Delicious. Tree: vigorous; not highly productive; biennial cropping; fruits drop If you use the scroll button the size is reported as 250-300G. They also distribute (2) scions if you order by January 10.

John all I warn you is they are out of Wisconsin. So their orders typically ship Late feb or March. I ordered in January and shipped yesterday. No prob for me but three feet of snow in March can delay their shipping.

I can wait. I ordered from Fedco and Cummings, last year. And I ordered rootstocks from Cummings this year. I have my USDA scions and my Cummings rootstocks, but haven't done the grafting yet. So, yes I could wait. In fact, their storage is better than mine so better yet.

I'd suggest you Google "apple germplasm collection" and add to that the country where you'd like to find a specific apple variety. I see references to collections in France, Italy and Poland. England, Poland and Russia are doing work developing rootstocks and may have an interest.

I would guess that Europian Union nations may allow plant material to be shipped across borders. But that's just a guess. The American collection is accessed via this web page.

I believe they may ship internationally but have no experience doing that, and it may be near impossible for an individual to do it. At this catalog on page 3 are some basic instructions for international orders.
