Apple graft union split

Good afternoon all: I noticed this split in my Jonafree earlier this spring and am curious how it may have happened. The split is on the north side of the trunk. I suspect that it may be due to torsion placed onto the trunk from the cockeyed manner in which the scaffolds were tied to the ground last year. Another possiblity is that it wasn't staked very well aside from the twisting manner I had the scffolds tied to the ground last year. Regardless, the tree did have alot of play through the last growing season and winter. Painful lesson. Do you think it'll come out of my stellar management? I'll never apply torque to a young tree again in an attempt to get a scaffold branch to go where I want it to. It didn't work very well either!

The crack about 1/4"+ deep
