Jade Plants

Has anyone ever seen a Jade plant in blossom? I was in a local Chinese restaurant yesterday (Vermont). They have about 8 large Jade Plants in their front window and they were all in heavy blossom. Beautiful White flowers all over them. I was flabbergasted as I have never known that Jade plants blossomed. I've had them for many, many years and have never seen mine in blossom. Is there something special you need to do to get them to blossom?

Hope this information may be of at least some help. I've had one for over 25 years and it has only bloomed twice. It resides in the same spot under the same conditions. I have read, where in order to get it to bloom, you have to vary the temps and light as one would a poinsettia or some orchids. Here is a link that should be of some help. Happy growing.

Yep they do bloom in Dec-Jan when lower light and withholding water. Mine bloomed last year but I didn't move it this year.

Becareful on the above link provided by donaldb as the article states to water once a week. That depends on the size of the pot. Larger pots need it less frequently.

    Hi Sandeep,

If you go 'next door' as it were, to the Cactus & Succulent Forum & search for "Blooming Jade" or "Bloooming Crassula", you'll find lots to read on this.

This blooms easily in Calif., but less so on the East Coast. I only know folks w/ greenhouses in the East who can bloom this. One key seems to be to summer it outside.

Yes, they're beautiful, glad you had the treat of seeing them in bloom.

    Hi Sandeef,

In Vermont? Wow...I would of asked the workers or probably the owner, "How'd they do that"?

I once saw plumeria in full blossom, at a local Chineese resturant and asked them myself.. They have many secrets...lol

You can bloom them here in the North East, without ever being outside such as mine did..:-)

If you go to the Cactus forum as suggested, many there, especially Norma can coach you to help them bloom..She did for me.

Hey PG, just so you know mine blooming in CA has nothing to do with CA. Its only outside for a few months in summer and would freeze in winter if left out. They are grown in frost free areas outside in the ground. I have seen some bloom and some never. They can get huge over 6 feet tall and wide and main trunk 6 inches.

My mother in the midwest once had 30 blooming. Some were kept inside to big to move and small ones outside in summer and all bloomed at the same time. She did nothing special to them to make them bloom. Only watered once a month and rarely fed them. She basically ignored them.
All 30 came from a single 6 inch branch sent in the mail from a friend here in CA. I wish I had pictures!

Gorgeous John!! I'm so jealous!! I really love those pink blooms!

Goblue, I wish you had pictures too. I've never had any blooms on my 3 yr. old Jade :o(

Josh, I love yours too...so Pretty!!

I had a Jade cutting for less than two months when it bloomed.... ;)
Luck of the draw, really. Thanks again, Meyer Mike!

    Aw,,You are welcome Josh!!!

It was the luck of the draw..Must mean something good in your life is brewing just ahead!

I still can't believe that little thing flowered! Is it still in bloom? The mother plant is.I bet they are starting to feel the warmth of your sun over there. I can almost feel it getting stronger here too, as soon as we get a day above 30..

Josh your other jades are amazing by the way..

    Mike..;-)

    Hey, Mike!
The cutting *would* still be blooming if I hadn't snipped the flower-stalks...I removed the flowers, hoping that the cutting would re-focus on vegetative growth. This cutting has been most unusual in that it hasn't lost a single leaf yet.

(Sorry for the cross-talk, John! - by the way, if you're willing, I have a proposal...perfectly decent, I assure you!)

    Good thinking Josh!

John, if it is possible, can you share exactly what you do to get yours to bloom so beautifully! I am not sure if you have before..If so, the link would be nice.

It looks like you grow it outdoors under cover on a deck or something. Does it stay out all year long? Do you fertilize it? Does it ever get direct sun in the summer? Does it rain alot there, and if so, what do you do to keep it on the drier side if so?

If you have any ideas or secrets, please share. You are amazing with these plants and pics mind you..

Thanks for the kind words everyone. Never imagined my "pink Jade" was such a rarity!

Josh....I will send you a PM as GW doesn't have my correct email address.

Mike....The plant stays outdoors all year. It's exposure is a south facing porch. I keep it on the porch so it doesn't get rained on as our winters are typically very rainy. If we are going to have temps below freezing, I bring it in and put it in the plant room that faces south. If we are going to have some sunny days, I put it out in the driveway to take advantage. I usually only fertilize once a year....late spring. Summer, it stays out in the sun all day. Basically, I just ignore it the rest of the time. I probably only water once a month in winter...if that often. Summer a bit more. I can usually tell by how the leaves look if it needs water....then it gets a THOROUGH soaking. Thanks for the compliments!

    John,
    I got your message. Thanks!

Also, what sort of fertilizer do you use?
I know that Randy uses an Osmocote product.
I've never really fertilized my Jades, and I'd like some pointers.

Josh, I think your blooming cutting is just adorable!

John, thanks so much for taking the time to tell us how your Beautiful blooming Jade is grown. I need all the pointers I can get, I can't get my Jade to bloom. I keep trying though and I'm not giving up. I'll be looking for the type of fertilizer you use as well.

If you don't mind another question...do you ever tip prune your Jade? I've read that tip pruning it around Sept/Oct can help with blooming, just wondering if you do this to yours? Thanks again!

Thanks for that info Jon...Your plants are so happy with your care for them.

Josh, You must be doing something right too!

    Nancy, you too....

You all have such amazing happy plants!

Hey puglvr and Josh...Wow, we get around don't we? I use the Shultz C&S fert. It's a liquid...2-7-7.

puglvr....I have never tip-pruned. In fact, I don't think I've ever really pruned it. It has suffered a few "frost prunings" though.

To those of you asking about fertilizer. If you're new to fertilizing Jades in particular or succulents in general, pls. note the numbers (NPK) of John's post.

2-7-7, typically for succulents, w/ a low first number (Nitrogen), so as not to encourage unduly lush foliage. It's suggested not to give succulents much fertilizer, I just do it in warmer months (for me in NYC, I do it maybe twice a year, once Spring, once Fall if that).

Hey, John! Thanks for the info.
I have some Foliage Pro that I'll give a try this Spring.

    Josh

Pg...What particular brand do you feed your plants? I might be able to buy some since we live up the these states...

Do you have any succulents that flower?

    Thank you..

    Mike

Just an FYI....tomato food can also be used for C&S. It's always on the low end of the NPK scale. Typically it's a 5-10-10 ratio or 7-20-20. You should use it at 1/2 the recomended dosage.

    Josh...I sent you an email.

I don't pay much attention to brand, as long as it's the type I want, liquid application (able to be diluted).

Currently in the house I have Peters (balanced), Schultz Bloombuster, Schultz AV & Schultz Cactus & Succulent (same as John cited); also some Osmocote (time release) & Scotts, time release acid fertilizer & even an old MG powder.

I suspect Schultz C&S (the one John mentioned 2-7-7) is readily available.

Currently, I have few succulents that bloom (not enough light) except multiple Euphorbias (milii types), Haworthias, Ceropegia & Thanksgiving Cacti.

My comments aren't just from my own experience &/or what I have or may have not grown that blooms indoors (not a lot here in NYC) but also from 10+ yrs. in my local C&S Society & a number of C&S Friends, including some in their own local C&S societies.

Also, I remind myself that many succulents grow in crummy soil & lousy conditions & don't have folks around to provide TLC & fertilizer other than ordinary animal droppings.

    Pg...lol

I thought I had alot of fertilizers..But I do not have a cactus and succulents in low NPK one for succulents and cactus..

Have you ever posted any pics of some of your plants? From the sounds of it, you have some pretty plants around your abode, even here in cold NYC...

I think I will run to the local nursery sometime in spring and follow your regimend.
Feed twice a year with a week water soluable fertilizer.

Much appreciated coming from another member here that has to keep plants inside most of our cold season.

Thank you for sharing some of the knowledge that you have aquired over the years.

The Schultz C & S 2-7-7 is available at Home Depot and lowes. I'ts what i'm using right now for my plants.

Thank you Jojo...Funny, I am in there all the time, and it never occured to me to look for that!

Thay actually have Orchard fertilizer set out on display with their Orchards, and you would think it would be a good idea to do same for all those succulents they sell.

    TTYL Jojo..:-)

    Hi Mike,
Here in AZ. the cactus and such are out side, greenhouse set up.. Wind rain, wet, so they don't have a lot of product outside.
