I planted 3 apple and 2 peach trees this spring. Cut back to whips (Thanks jellyman, for advice on pruning) and buds are just beginning to grow.

question 1)Penn State fruit guide has a spraying schedule in it. Should I follow this during first year, or spray as problems arise?

question 2)Once I decide on which lower laterals to keep, should I remove unwanted laterals or wait until next years pruning.

Varieties are pristine, honeycrisp, and goldrush apples.(All EMLA 7)

Peach are white lady and glowingstar.
