White goes with most anything. I think it needs to depend on what else you are planning in your kitchen, such as back splash, floors and colors you want to have.

black countertops show lots of fingerprints. i would go lighter

Agree with both! Good points from Karen Paul above - consider a ligher color that has a color in it that you can tie to some of the other accent points of the room.

White cabinets, light countertops are soooo boring to the eye. Go darker for the countertops...doesn't have to be dark...just nice contrast. If your floors are dark, just go a few shades lighter than the floor and it will be very pretty...If you see the all white kitchens in Houzz they just look too sterile and hospital like. BTW, all white kitchens are a nightmare to keep clean.

I think your housekeeping skills come into play when you do white on white. I've installed a marble with gray running through it, white cabinets, metal looking porcelain flooring and a warm porcelain "bamboo" back splash. The back splash is virtually carefree, the metal floors are the only pain, the marble (because of color and pattern), shows very little dirt and grime or fingerprints, and the cabinets are washed down about once a month. Of course marble may not be a good choice for everyone, but there are so many materials out there with color that will read "white on white" and still be easy to maintain. As for a honed surface, it may not show fingerprints but it will show everything else. My daughter did a honed surface and is still muttering about it. She's a cook, so that can make a huge difference as well.

Dark granite can add drama, but a very uniform black will need to be buffed with a dry cloth to keep it looking spotless. There are some very beautiful dark granites with some "movement" or pattern in them that will be easier to care for. stone with alot of pattern is the easiest to care for. Marble and honed finishes are beautiful, but you really need to know what to expect with them
