Medlars / Pruning

I grafted about 150 medlars last year and an additional handful of a new cultivar this year. They seem to be doing quite well, although their vigor really does seem to differ based on cultivar and rootstock. I grafted six different cultivars last Spring (Breda Giant, Nottingham, Puciu Big, Puciulot, Sultan & Westerveld), and did each on two different Hawthorne rootstocks, specifically Crataegus monogyna and C. crus-galli.

Now that these trees are a year old, I'm wondering about pruning. I probably should've clipped the top of each tree when they were dormant to induce branching. Now that they're back in active growth mode, I'm wondering if I should still do it, or to wait until this coming winter when they're dormant again.

Any thoughts from the medlar folks out there?

John
